asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that Cork Corporation have formally adopted a rate of 65/10d. in the pound instead of the actual 72/- in the pound required for their estimates; that they have agreed to borrow over £100,000 in order to fill the gap between the 65/10d. and the actual estimated demand of over 72/- in the pound; and that this sum of over £100,000 is proposed to be repaid by the larger city in principal and interest over the next ten years; if he intends to approve of this unique method of rate relief; and if he intends to compel the corporation to strike an adequate rate.

I have seen a copy of the estimate of expenses adopted by Cork Corporation for 1965-66. I have no information in regard to the proposals of the corporation in regard to the borrowing referred to by the Deputy nor am I aware that the rate made by the corporation for the current year is inadequate. As to the remainder of the question I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question by him on 5th May.
Is the Minister aware that principal and interest on this sum of over £100,000 is to be paid by people who are getting no benefit whatever from this relief of rates this year in Cork city? Does he intend taking any action in that matter?
