Vol. 217 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turkey Production.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (a) the target figures for the output of turkeys this season, (b) their estimated-output value, (c) the target figure numerically of turkeys to be exported, (d) their estimated value, and (e) the estimated figures for 1970.

No target has been set for the output of turkeys this season. As I indicated in reply to a question on 23rd June, the 1970 target figure for poultry output was, due to the lack of homogeneity in the pattern of poultry production, calculated on a global basis covering all types of poultry production. Separate figures for turkeys are not, therefore, available.

Does this mean that the figures mean nothing? We were supposed to be increasing our markets, according to the Second Programme for Economic Expansion.

Which is all Sweet Fanny Adams.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say what steps they are now taking about the coming season in regard to the sale of turkeys? It will be no laughing matter for the poor woman bringing them into the country town if there is no sale for them.

The question asks about target figures but makes no reference at all to markets.

If target figures are to be arrived at in the Department, surely there must be some investigation as to how the markets will be and what the prospects are?

So the Fine Gael backbenchers say.

(Interruptions.)

It works in with what we were discussing yesterday and today.
