Vol. 218 No. 4

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following Order: Nos. 1, 7 and 2. It is proposed to interrupt business at 12 o'clock to take No. 2 and, when completed, to resume the Order. Questions will be taken at 2.30 p.m.

Can the Taoiseach say on what day next week it is proposed to take No. 3, and, in that connection, is it proposed to make a comprehensive statement on the economic situation?

It is intended to take that motion next week. The day is a matter which can be arranged by the Whips. I do not contemplate that anything other than the implications of the motion will be discussed.

The reason I mentioned that is the Taoiseach is aware that statements have been made by himself and Ministers at gatherings outside the House, meetings of one sort or another. Does he not think, in view of the gravity of the situation, that there should be a general discussion on this motion on the economic situation?

I do not think this motion would be appropriate for it. In fact, it would tend to distort the purposes of the motion.

I do not think we should associate the question of these clerical grades with price controls.

That is my view.

Will the Taoiseach consider having a separate debate?

The opportunity for a general debate on economic policy is certain to arise during the course of the session on some Bill or motion. Should the Government have any business of that kind for the Dáil, they will propose that business. If there is any particular aspect of public affairs on which the Opposition Parties desire to have a debate, it seems to me the obligation is on them to propose a motion on which it could be based.
