Vol. 220 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of River Shannon Flow.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance (i) how many sluice gates, weirs or other devices there are on the Shannon helping to control its flow, (ii) how many have (a) full time caretakers, and (b) part time caretakers, and (iii) how many are equipped with telephone communication.

For navigation purposes or for electricity generating purposes the flow of the River Shannon is controlled by weirs or sluice barrages at seven sites. At two of the sites on the upper reaches of the river there are part-time caretakers and at the remaining five the caretakers are full-time. There are telephones at four of the sites.
