Vol. 221 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connaught Rangers Mutiny.

7.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether any arrangements have been made with the Indian Government to commemorate the mutiny of the Connaught Rangers who 50 years ago made their historic gesture in sympathy with the 1916 leaders.

It has been arranged that our Ambassador to India will organise a function in New Delhi in honour of the Golden Jubilee of Easter Week to which prominent Indian personalities will be invited.

Does the Minister for External Affairs intend to attend?

Mr. O'Leary

Is this function in New Delhi intended to commemorate the mutiny of the Connaught Rangers?

In regard to the first supplementary, I am not aware that the Minister for External Affairs intends to attend.

That is a great wonder.

In regard to Deputy O'Leary's question, the function is to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Easter Week. The Deputy is, I am sure, aware that there is a slight inaccuracy in the question in which he refers to the mutiny taking place 50 years ago.

Mr. O'Leary

It was some time afterwards.

The function is to commemorate 1916.

Mr. O'Leary

Will it include this historical event?

It is to commemorate Easter Week.

Will it be similar to what will be celebrated in other cities in the world?

The Connaught Rangers mutiny took place in 1920.

Mr. O'Leary

Specific reference should be made to this mutiny.

It has no relevance.

It would be relevant to the period from 1916 to 1921.
