Vol. 224 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exchange of Films.

2.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if any arrangements have been made for the distribution or exchange of films under the committee set up by the Council of Europe for that purpose; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is a full exchange of information concerning films between Ireland and other European countries. This exchange is conducted through the National Film Institute of Ireland and my Department on the Irish side and through the Council of Europe and national film centres in continental countries on the European side.

The question of the arrangements which should be made for free exchange of films between European countries was the subject of a special conference recently organised by the Council of Europe. The Recommendations of this Conference are still under examination.

What sort of films are being distributed?

The films disseminated through the Council of Europe are films of a cultural character.

Do they go into the ordinary cinemas and to the schools?

No, I would not like to guarantee that. Copies of certain films were sent to the Council of Europe and are, of course, available also through the National Film Institutes of other countries.

Were they distributed throughout the whole country?

I could not answer that.

Mr. O'Malley

The Deputy might use his influence to get them into Telefís Éireann.

Charlie might do that.

There would be a complete shut-down there.
