Vol. 224 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Pesticides.

3.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware that the indiscriminate use of chemical warfare against insects is having a detrimental effect on birds and small mammals throughout Europe by the elimination of their natural food; and if the Government will be prepared to take note of the deliberations of the Council of Europe, and to introduce legislation, if necessary, in order to comply with whatever guide-lines they may lay down.

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has agreed to the convening of an ad hoc study group on pesticides proposed by the European Committee for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The report of the study group is awaited and will be given careful and sympathetic consideration by the Government.

The problem of pesticides has not so far given rise to serious difficulties in this country but the Government Departments concerned are maintaining watch on the situation and have taken careful note of the deliberations and recommendations of the Council of Europe on this subject.
