Vol. 225 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach why action on Ireland's application for entry to the EEC must await action on applications of other countries; and if he will state to what countries he was referring in his reply to questions on this matter on 27th September.

Apart from the question as to whether the European Economic Community would be prepared to consider any application in advance of one for Britain, it is clear that it would not be realistic for us to take a step which would result in the erection of a trade barrier between ourselves and the market which takes around 70 per cent of our exports.

Hear, hear.

As to the second part of the Deputy's question, I was referring to the other applicants for membership, namely, Britain, Denmark and Norway.
