Vol. 226 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Marriage Age.

81.

asked the Minister for Health if he has any proposals to raise the marriage age in Ireland, which is one of the lowest in Europe.

I hope to introduce legislation in the near future fixing the age of 16 years as the normal minimum legal age for the marriage of both males and females.

Sixteen for both sexes?

What is it at the moment?

I do not think there is any.

There is—12 and 13.

Could the Minister tell us what the age is?

There may be in Canon Law and in common law, but there is certainly no statutory minimum age, so far as I am aware.

They would have a right chance of getting a house, would they not?

The Minister would not think of instituting a bounty for unmarried TDs, would he?

That is a separate question.
