Vol. 226 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alien Employment Applications.

33.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of alien employment applications granted in 1966; whether this was an increase on 1965; and the number of applications for each type of employment.

The number of new alien employment permits granted in 1966 was 1,196, a decrease of 183 on the number granted in 1965.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a table showing the number of new applications granted for each type of employment in 1966.

Following is the table:

Is the Minister absolutely satisfied that in each case efforts are made to make sure that Irish nationals get any jobs available in preference to aliens?

It is the practice to try to ensure that where an Irish national is available an alien will not be given the position. To this end, consultations are held with the various people who may be interested.

One often finds that in foreign-based industries where certain jobs, especially skilled jobs, are available which could be filled by Irish nationals, they are filled by aliens brought in by the company. I should like the Minister's Department seriously to concern itself with this problem.

The Department does concern itself with this problem and consults the unions.
