Vol. 226 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foxford (Mayo) Flooding.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that flooding occurs at Providence Road, Foxford, County Mayo; and what steps he proposes to take to have the streets of this town resurfaced.

I am not so aware. The resurfacing of the streets in Foxford is a matter in the first instance for Mayo County Council who are the responsible road authority. To date the road authority have not submitted any proposal for resurfacing the streets in question to my Department.

Might I inquire from the Parliamentary Secretary if he is aware that 200 workers on their way to the Providence Woollen Mills and something like 100 schoolchildren as well as the ordinary rank and file of people traversing this place had to wade through waters at that point where flooding occurred? Furthermore, would he take the matter up with the local authority? I am sick and tired asking them about it.

Is the Deputy a member of the local authority? This is a matter for the local authority.

They tell us they have not got the money to do it.

Of course they have money. Do you not know that money is allocated for road work every year and if the Deputy wants to get the roads resurfaced——

We cannot get the grants.

They are negotiating and negotiating. They will do anything but pay money.
