asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that some seven houses in good condition, the property of his Department, are at present untenanted on Spike Island, Cobh; and if in view of the extreme housing shortage in Cobh he will take immediate steps to have the houses let to suitable applicants.

The only vacant houses in Spike Island are married quarters which may be allocated to serving personnel of the Permanent Defence Force. For military reasons, none of those houses can be made available for letting.

Would it be dangerous to security?

It has nothing to do with it, but security is a thing that must be maintained also.

Surely the Minister is not serious when he says——

I said it has nothing to do with security, but speaking generally security is a matter that has to be given consideration also. It is not a laughing matter.
