Vol. 226 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Haulbowline (Cork) Houses.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that three houses in perfect condition, the property of Irish Steel Limited at Haulbowline, County Cork, have now been untenanted for over three years; and if in view of the grave shortage of housing accommodation in Cobh and the loss of revenue to the company he will ensure that these houses will be let to suitable tenants.

I presume that the houses referred to by the Deputy are those within the works perimeter. The letting of these houses presents a problem because the company may want the sites in connection with adaptation or expansion of the works at some future date. I am informed, however, that the future use of vacant houses belonging to the company is under active consideration and that the company is in communication with the Department of Defence with a view to establishing whether temporary occupation by employees of that Department can be arranged on terms that could be reconciled with the company's own requirements.
