Vol. 227 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Local Electoral Areas.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether finality has been reached in drawing up the new local electoral areas in Dublin; when they will be announced; whether population figures are the sole criterion in revising the areas; and whether any consultations took place with Dublin Corporation in the matter.

The Dublin County Borough (Electoral Areas) Order, 1967, which divides the city into 12 electoral areas, was made on 8th March, 1967. While I am not statutorily required to have regard to any particular criteria in making such a division, I aimed at achieving equality of representation based on the number of electors in each area. Dublin Corporation was not consulted in the matter.

Are we to take it that the archaic town ordinance remains as the result of the Order? I would also like to ask if the Minister would consider it advisable in order to facilitate the many scores of competitors for membership of Dublin Corporation, and who are now appearing on the scene, to arrange with the manager that maps of the new electoral divisions will be made available, even at cost?

I will try to arrange that but I imagine most of the scores of competitors will know what areas are comprised in the different wards, particularly any of them with such experience as Deputy Dunne.

Are you going to have aldermen?

All the competitors are not familiar with them.

I am glad to see the Deputy's consideration for his competitors.

I look after the Minister in Ballyfermot.
