Vol. 227 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Iron and Steel.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the duties or tariffs, if any, on corrugated iron and steel imported into this country from (a) Britain and (b) other European countries; the difference in price between imported corrugated iron f.o.b. Irish ports and corrugated iron manufactured here; and how this difference compares with the grant for farm buildings.

The tariff applicable to imported corrugated iron or steel sheets, not more than 3/16 inch in thickness, is:

Special Preferential

United Kingdom

Northern Ireland

30%

30%

20%

18%

16%

I am informed that there are wide variations in the price and quality of different consignments of imported corrugated iron or steel sheeting and that there is the further consideration that grants under the Farms Buildings Scheme administered by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries are not calculated in such a way that they could be compared with a differential in price between home produced and imported corrugated iron. Because of these considerations it would not be practicable to establish the comparisons sought by the Deputy.
