Vol. 227 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath School.

29.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any information as to when the additional accommodation will be provided for Castletownkilpatrick national school, Navan, County Meath; and if he is aware that there are children in the area who cannot at present be accommodated because of the overcrowded conditions.

My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of providing a new prefabricated classroom with toilet accommodation at Castletownkilpatrick national school.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that the Manager of the school has placed a contract for the new room and that its erection will be undertaken without delay.

Is the Minister aware that this three-teacher school is very much overcrowded, that there are upwards of 150 pupils in this school and there is not sufficient accommodation for them? The parents of this year's crop of children who will be going to school for the first time were told: "Do not send them to school, because we have no room for them." That is a very bad situation. If the Minister is not already aware of the situation, I should like him to take cognisance of it.

It is a wonderful situation. If the Deputy came from the west of Ireland, he would appreciate that.
