Vol. 228 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee Bacon Factory.

10.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the entire staff of 160 employed at Denny's bacon factory, Tralee, have been served with a week's notice; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

The position has been reported to be as stated, due apparently to the firm's current pig supply problems.

The Government have already taken positive measures to encourage increased pig production generally, which is very desirable on many grounds.

Is the Minister aware that 26 men were laid off in this factory last week, due to the scarcity of pigs and the export of bacon? This will mean a loss of about £300 a week to the town, in addition to the pay packets of the 26 men. As we do not want to see this factory closing down in Tralee, can the Government do something to increase the supply of pigs because this position has been going on for too long now?
