Vol. 231 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Limerick.

29.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in view of the present serious unemployment situation in Limerick he will consider introducing special measures immediately to deal with the situation for an interim period until the general review of industrial development has been completed by his Department.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in Limerick and other areas. I do not think it would be desirable to introduce special measures for Limerick pending the conclusion of the general review of the policy for future industrial expansion. I hope, however, that the selection of Limerick/Clare as a pilot area for the Small Industries Scheme will make a worthwhile impact on the employment problems in the area. The Government have already provided valuable facilities to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas.

The Deputy may take it that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in Limerick will receive my most sympathetic consideration.

Has the Minister any information which would indicate how soon the Government's examination of the whole industrial development programme might be completed?
