Vol. 241 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trades Descriptions Bill.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he proposes to introduce a Trades Descriptions Bill to ensure that true and accurate descriptions are given to goods offered for sale.

The Merchandise Marks Acts already make it an offence to apply a false trade description to goods offered for sale. I am aware that the provisions of the Acts need supplementing in a number of respects to make them suitable to modern conditions, and the various aspects of the matter have been under examination as part of the programme of consumer protection which I undertook some time ago. I expect to be able to circulate to Deputies very shortly the text of the Merchandise Marks Bill, 1969, to remedy some of the deficiencies in the present law, and I intend to follow this up with further legislation as my detailed examination of the position proceeds.
