Vol. 241 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Independence Celebrations.

2.

asked the Taoiseach what tributes are now being planned to commemorate in 1972 the 50th anniversary of the deaths of Art Ó Griofa and Mícheál Ó Coileáin.

As I indicated in reply to a question in this House on the 10th July, 1968, a special day, Easter Sunday, has been set apart on which the State celebrates the securing of Independence and honours all who took part in the struggle to achieve it; and this decision was taken in order to avoid the difficulties which would arise in selecting individual anniversaries in commemorating which the State might participate. The only variation of this decision is the annual commemoration at Arbour Hill for those who died in 1916.

Would the Taoiseach say what the difficulties are?

The difficulties are well known.

There should be no difficulty.

We would have a plethora of similar commemorations had not the decision taken long since been adhered to.
