Vol. 241 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Statistics.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons in (a) 1966 and (b) now, earning annually in excess of £1,200.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available.

The only relevant data available relate to wage-earners covered by the census of industrial production and to persons in the Civil Service.

The number of wage-earners earning over £24 per week, covered by the census of industrial production, including building and construction, in October 1966 was 7,842, while in October 1967, the latest date for which figures are available, the number was 11,263.

The number of Civil Servants earning over £1,200 per annum, excluding allowances, in January 1966 was 5,286. The corresponding number in January 1969 was 8,704.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether people in other categories of employment would have had increases at a similar rate to those in the Civil Service and the building trade, to which he himself referred.

I cannot say that. It is proposed to examine data compiled by the Revenue Commissioners for tax purposes with a view to the preparation of a statement classifying persons by income ranges.
