Vol. 242 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Army Officers in Middle East.

57.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, in view of the recent statements by U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations, expressing grave concern about the increasing violence in the Middle East war zone and U Thant's open questioning of the future role of the United Nations peace-keeping force there, he or the Taoiseach has made any representations to the United Nations concerning the usefulness and safety of the Irish Army officers in the area.

As I indicated in the Dáil on 16th July, we made representations to the United Nations Secretariat and received an assurance that all possible measures are being taken to protect the observers and preserve their status. The Government have been in constant touch on this question with the secretariat since that time.
