Vol. 244 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enforcement of Maintenance Orders.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of talks between his Department and the British Lord Chancellor's office concerning reciprocal provision for the enforcement of maintenance orders for deserted wives between Ireland and Britain.

Officers of my Department have recently had discussions with officers in Britain about the need for legislation to enable maintenance orders to be enforced on a reciprocal basis between Britain and this country. In the course of these discussions the urgency of the matter from our point of view was strongly emphasised.

I am glad to be able to say that the British Government are aware of the need to amend and extend their existing legislation which deals with the reciprocal enforcement of maintenance orders abroad and that the preparation of proposals for the necessary legislation is well advanced. However, the British Government cannot at present give any indication as to when their legislation will actually be introduced. In the meantime, my Department is keeping in close touch with the British Home Office in regard to the matter.
