Vol. 244 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Publications.

45.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the amount of money spent in respect of daily and weekly papers and books and magazines for his use in respect of the year ended 31st December, 1969.

The cost in so far as the Minister for External Affairs is concerned was £25 12s. Od.

In view of the smallness of that sum does the Minister's Department receive copies of the leading newspapers of the world or does it leave itself in ignorance of their contents?

Yes, we get all the main newspapers, including the Clare Champion.

No, we pay for them.

£25 would not go far in buying world newspapers, would it? It is curious how you get them without paying for them?

I shall have to look at it again to separate what comes to the Minister's Office and what goes to the Department.

(Interruptions.)

The Minister's reply and the other Ministerial replies given to the same question relate only to papers coming to the private office of the Minister but not coming to the Department?

The answer relates to papers that come to me personally.
