Vol. 244 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Remand Home.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice if in view of the fact that the committal and remand of juveniles from Cork district court must at present be made to Letterfrack, Daingean or Dublin he will consider the provision of a remand home in Cork city, to cater for Cork and adjacent counties.

19.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will review the position regarding the committal and remand of juvenile prisoners from the district court in Cork city.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

I am not satisfied with the present position. Having regard to the heavy cost that would be involved in the establishment of a new remand home, however, I think it necessary to await the report of the Committee on Industrial and Reformatory Schools. This committee, which is under the chairmanship of a member of the judiciary, was established by the Government in 1967. It is expected to report in the very near future.
