Vol. 245 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Schemes.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange to have approval sent out for the Laharne and Rangue part of the Cromane group water scheme, County Kerry to enable the work to get under way.

Two separate schemes are involved. Approval has been given to the design for the Tullig-Laharne scheme, which is an extension of the Muingaphuca group scheme. Kerry County Council requested that the pipe sizes be increased to facilitate future group development in the area and indicated that they were willing to defray the additional cost involved, subject to my Department approving of a subsidisable loan. I have notified the county council of my agreement to this proposal. The group are being advised to seek quotations for the necessary materials so that firm costings may be prepared and the grants allocated to enable the scheme to commence.

The scheme for Rangue area is dependent on the provision of larger-sized pipes in the Tullig-Laharne scheme. Detailed planning of the Rangue proposal is being undertaken.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed group water scheme at Abbeyknockmoy, County Galway.

There is no proposal with my Department for a group water supply scheme at Abbeyknockmoy. The Deputy may, however, have in mind a group scheme at Culliagh South-Ballyglunin. The proposed source of water for that scheme has proved unsatisfactory and a suitable alternative supply is not available. Two of the original participants are now anxious to provide their own supplies on a joint basis. This is being investigated.

asked the Minister for Local Government the position regarding the proposed group water scheme at Curry and Pollanower, Corofin, Tuam, County Galway.

On the basis of yield and quality tests recently carried out by Galway County Council, the proposed source for this scheme appears satisfactory, subject to chlorination. The group are being advised to have the design for the scheme prepared.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that residences at Edenmore Cottages, Edenmore Road, Dublin, have no water supply; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter.

The question of servicing houses in its administrative area with a piped water supply is a matter for the local sanitary authority. I have received no proposals from the sanitary authority concerned in this case for the provision of a water supply to these cottages.

Will the Minister not agree that the citizens of Dublin generally have a legitimate cause for dissatisfaction if, with the local authority not in existence, the responsible Minister refuses to answer questions which are of concern to them?

The local authority are in existence.

Is the Minister not aware that any Deputy of any constituency, particularly in the north side of Dublin, knows that the water supply situation has reached crisis proportion? Do we have to wait for a Dublin evening newspaper to draw attention to it before the Minister will initiate remedial action?

That is not what the question is about at all.
