Vol. 245 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Radio Transmission.

14.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when VHF transmission will begin from the new RTE mast at Ballinamore, Blackrock, County Cork.

The new installation referred to is a medium-wave station and I understand that VHF transmissions will not be made from it. Listeners in Cork will continue to receive VHF transmissions from Mullaghanish.

Will medium-wave transmissions be made through this mast?

At present it is on test.

But it has been erected for a year and a half. Does the Minister realise that?

I do not.

Will the Minister agree that it is pointless to have this thing erected for a year and a half and not in use?

Yes, but there is the time gap between the erection and the actual testing and there were problems in between. It will be fully operational, of course, in the next few weeks when the tests have been completed. I have not got any details as to the specific reasons for the delay in putting it into actual operation or the reasons for the long testing.

VHF transmissions can be received in Cork now?

From Mullaghanish.
