Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Role of Garda.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider the feasibility of having an examination carried out by appropriately qualified people into the role, organisation, and personnel policy of the Garda Síochána with particular reference to its relationship with the Department of Justice.

As I mentioned in reply to a recent question on this subject I am studying the report thoroughly and when I am in a position to make a decision on any particular recommendation I shall not hesitate to do so, consulting the Minister for Finance and the Government themselves if the magnitude of a particular issue necessitates such a course.

Is the Minister aware that on a number of occasions representatives from various newspapers have had difficulty in getting information in regard to particular matters? The Deputy will appreciate that this was a suggestion made at the end of the Conroy Report. It was not a specific recommendation. The Conroy Commission also recommended the setting up of a planning and development unit. This is in process of being set up and what the Deputy has in mind would be best handled by this unit, whose job it will be to examine all the matters mentioned by the Deputy.
