Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - District Court Clerks' Remuneration.

61.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the discontent of the younger and unassigned district court clerks in the provinces, whose salary is nearly £300 less than that of officers doing exactly the same work in the Dublin district courts; and if he is prepared to consult with the Minister for Finance irrespective of the conciliation and arbitration scheme with a view to ensuring that, like all other civil servants, district court clerks serving in provincial areas are not on a lesser pay scale than their Dublin colleagues.

District court clerks come within the scope of the scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service which was negotiated between the Minister for Finance and the staff organisations concerned. Accordingly claims for improved pay for these officers fall to be pursued through the scheme, and I am not in a position to intervene.

The present pay scales of both the provincial and the Dublin metropolitan district court clerks derive from scales fixed in 1964 by the arbitration board set up under the scheme.
