I am informed that the cost of providing a zebra crossing ranges from £100 to £170 and of providing a pedestrian operated light signal installation from £550 to £650.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of accidents in the Dublin city area at pedestrian crossings controlled by (a) orange beacons and (b) traffic lights in each of the last three years; and the average number per crossing of each kind expressed in a convenient form.

The details required by the Deputy are available only from 1st January, 1968, on and the figures for 1969 are not yet available.

The returns for the year 1968 show that 51 accidents occurred at zebra crossings in Dublin city, representing an average accident rate of 0.63 per crossing. The number of accidents which occurred at pedestrain operated lights and traffic light signals incorporating push button pedestrian phases was 25, representing an average rate of 0.33 per crossing of this type.

The Deputy will appreciate that the numbers of these crossings varied during the year.
