Vol. 246 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Security Reports.

30.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is satisfied that all security reports submitted to his Department over the past 12 months have been retained in safe keeping; when the question of smuggling of arms into this country was first adverted to in these reports; and what action was taken thereon.

I am satisfied that the regulations governing the handling and safe custody of all classified documents are comprehensive and adequate. I have no reason to doubt that those regulations have been strictly observed in relation to the documents referred to in the question.

The Taoiseach indicated to the House on the 14th instant that he had given all the information about the attempted illegal importation of arms which it was possible for him to give at present without prejudicing subsequent action by the Attorney General.

Perhaps the Minister has information the Taoiseach has not got.

The Taoiseach is in possession of all relevant information.

Surely the Minister and the Taoiseach are aware that arms were imported before this date by boat and private plane? Surely he is so aware but is not prepared to give the information? All we are given are half truths. The Minister is well aware of it because he will not deny it. The people of Ireland are entitled to the truth and they should be told it. He is silent Jack, now.
