Vol. 247 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cheque Charges.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if the commercial banks levied extra charges on the collecting of customers' cheques just prior to the current bank strike; if so, if Ministerial sanction was sought and granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the commercial banks did not make any alteration in their charges for the collection of customers' cheques prior to the closure.

Surely the statement by Mr. Titterington, Secretary of the Bank Officials Association, is to the contrary? Is the Minister denying the veracity of that statement?

I am not aware of the statement to which the Deputy refers but, as I have told him, the information available to me is that the banks did not make any alterations in their charges.
