Vol. 247 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

45.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the urgent need for the provision of a telephone at Blackfort, Castlebar, County Mayo; and when it is proposed to provide one.

It is hoped to include an additional telephone kiosk for Castlebar in next year's programme. The claims of the Blackfort area will be borne in mind when a site for the kiosk is being selected.

46.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk in Glanmire, County Cork, in view of the large concentration of population in the area; and, if so, when.

The extended kiosk programme for rural areas provides for replacement of call office telephones in local post offices by street kiosks in areas where the call office telephone is used to a fair extent. Glanmire is not likely to be included in the programme as the call office telephone is little used.

There are at least one thousand people living in Glanmire and its immediate environment. They are very anxious to have a telephone in the village which they can use at all times.

Glanmire consists of three shops, a garage, a licensed premises and about 40 houses. The call office telephone is available up to 5.30 p.m. and at all times in emergencies. There is another kiosk in Riverstown, which is about one mile away. There are 14 subscribers in Glanmire, including the two call boxes.

47.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have a telephone kiosk erected at Upper Aghada, Midleton, County Cork; and, if so, when.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Upper Aghada where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.

Would the Minister like to state how these people can make telephone calls in cases of emergency when no kiosk is available to them and the nearest telephone is at Whitegate a number of miles away?

Whitegate and Rostellan are both about a mile away. I understand a kiosk was provided in Rostellan about a month ago. Upper Aghada comprises a church, school, licensed premises, three shops and about 28 houses. There are ten subscribers in the village, including two coin boxes. If the neighbours are kind to each other it should be possible to get over the problem.

48.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will erect a telephone kiosk at Ballintoher, Killenaule, County Tipperary.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Ballintoher where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.
