Vol. 248 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pay and Conditions.

38.

asked the Minister for Defence the date on which he received the report of the review committee on Army pay and conditions; and when he expects to be in a position to implement the recommendations.

The report of the working party which was set up to review the pay of the Permanent Defence Force and related matters, was submitted to the Minister for Finance and myself on the 18th June.

It is necessary to distinguish between the recommendations of the working party and the decisions which will be taken on these recommendations. As I stated in the House on the 24th June in reply to Question No. 34, the report of the working party will not be published but the decisions will. I am doing all I can to have decisions taken at the earliest possible date.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary be able to say whether this report is likely to result in the same type of increases as were recommended by the Public Services Committee which last year governed the increases given to Army personnel?

No decision has been taken on the report to date and so I would not be in a position at this time to answer that question.

I ask the question because I am quite sure that there is a policy decision on this. I should like to know if the Government intend to ignore the Public Services Committee recommendations and instead hitch their wagon to the second star which they themselves have created?

That is a separate question.

I have a question down for next week in any case and so I shall get the information.
