Vol. 248 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction the Barnacarroll group water scheme, Claremorris, County Mayo.

The design for this scheme has been approved by Mayo County Council and the group are seeking quotations for the necessary materials, et cetera, to carry it out. The provisional estimate indicates that the scheme may not be within the group's resources, and until this has been clarified approval may not issue.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work will commence on the extension of the water scheme at Castletownbere, County Cork.

I have sanctioned the tenders for this scheme and I hope to give a decision on the local authority's application for a loan to finance the scheme shortly.

In view of the grave necessity for this water scheme for trawlers, would the Minister give it a high priority and have it carried out as soon as possible?

This scheme is receiving priority consideration.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is intended to sanction an extension of water supply to Baltimore, County Cork.

Contract documents for this scheme were approved by me last week.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now in a position to sanction a loan for the Rathnew to Cronakeary water scheme and the Ashford to Killiskey water scheme, County Wicklow.

No application for a loan to finance either of these schemes has been received in my Department to date.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the reason for the lack of progress in the Barnabrow, Cloyne, County Cork group water scheme.

There has been no avoidable delay with this scheme, which was approved by my Department on 5th May, 1970. Work did not commence, however, as cement pipes were not available due to the recent cement strike. I understand that these pipes should be available in six to eight weeks, after which work can commence.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government when sanction will be forthcoming for the provision of a new sewage treatment plant at Charleville, County Cork.

Preliminary proposals for this scheme are under consideration in my Department. I cannot indicate at this stage when a decision thereon is likely to issue.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position of the Kanturk, County Cork trunk main water scheme.

I hope to convey a decision to the local authority on their revised proposals for this scheme shortly.

Could the Minister say when he hopes to sanction the revised scheme?

Shortly. There will not be any undue delay.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position of the suggested extension of the water main from Newtown to augment the supply to Charleville town, County Cork.

A decision on the Cork County Council's preliminary proposals for this scheme will issue as soon as possible.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that so many water supply schemes prepared and designed by the northern committee of the Cork County Council are awaiting sanction in his Department and in view of the real urgent need for having them proceeded with, he will now sanction some of them at least.

Having regard to the necessity to conserve available capital for housing and other essential services, only those sanitary services works of the highest priority can be allowed to proceed at the present time. On this basis water and sewerage schemes costing more than £1 million have been released for commencement in the Cork area over the past year. I hope, however, to convey a decision to the northern committee of the Cork County Council shortly regarding their proposals for the improvement of the water supply to Kanturk and Rathluirc.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the position in regard to the Ballyshoneen (Berrings), group water scheme, County Cork.

The design for this scheme was recently approved by Cork County Council subject to the use of high density polyethylene pipes of increased size. This involves an increase in cost and the county council are being asked to submit to my Department a proposal to cover the increased cost.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction the group water scheme at Cooliprevane, Ballyporcan, Cahir, County Tipperary.

The completed design for this scheme was received by my Department on 3rd July, 1970. This is being examined and, if in order, will be transmitted to Tipperary County Council for formal approval. I cannot say at this stage when sanction will issue.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will direct the Bray Commissioner to build, at the earliest possible time, a service reservoir to provide water storage for the Bray area as this is the only way to maintain adequate water pressures in Boghall, Vevay and other elevated areas in Bray.

The Bray Urban Council's revised proposals for the erection of a water service reservoir to serve their district was approved on the 9th March last.

56.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the present position in regard to the extension of the Millstreet sewerage scheme to Lackabawn, County Cork.

Preliminary proposals for this scheme which were recently received in my Department are being examined.
