Vol. 248 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Drainage.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of money spent by his Department on river drainage since 1st January, 1965, to the latest date for which figures are available; and the total amount for County Cork for the same period.

In reply to a question on the 7th instant I quoted the total expenditure on arterial drainage each year for the past 20 years. Arterial drainage schemes are dealt with on a catchment area basis and no record is kept of the expenditure in each county.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is a problem in Cork County that is getting progressively worse since the Local Authorities (Works) Act was discontinued and acres of good land are being flooded each year because river drainage is left unattended?

The general arterial drainage programme is going ahead since its priorities were drawn up in 1945 and I have no intention of changing them. They are dealt with on a catchment area basis and not on a county basis.

It is a problem in Cork County Council.
