Vol. 248 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Polling Places.

60.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has instructed local authorities to reorganise polling places and polling districts on electoral districts; and if he is aware that such reorganisation may mean that, in certain areas, voters will have to pass by a polling place to reach the polling place in their electoral division in which they must vote.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the circular in regard to polling schemes issued by my Department to local authorities on 2nd December, 1969. While it was suggested in that circular that polling districts should comprise, as far as practicable, complete district electoral divisions or wards, it was stressed that polling districts must meet the reasonable requirements of electors. As the making of a polling scheme is a reserved function, it is a matter for the elected members of each local authority to ensure that situations such as that envisaged by the Deputy do not arise.
