Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Fire Protection Service.

92.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any plans are under consideration to afford greater protection against fire for residential districts in Dublin city which are now surrounded by industrial developments which stock large supplies of inflammable material; and whether he considers more stringent fire protection service should be instituted by such firms.

Under the Fire Brigades Act, 1940, it is a matter for local sanitary authorities to make provision for the prompt and efficient extinguishing of fires in their districts and for the protection and rescue of persons and property from injury by fire. While the fire cover being provided in Dublin City is regarded as adequate for present needs. I understand that the local authority is engaged in a reorganisation programme designed to meet foreseeable future needs. In the case of projects involving the building of new factories or the reconstruction of existing factories situated in or near residential districts, the question of fire risk to these areas is taken into account by fire officers in making recommendations for planning permissions. In addition, the fire prevention staff of the Dublin Fire Brigade carry out inspections of existing buildings including factories.
