Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Housing Applicants.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will inform the House of the total number of approved housing applicants to Dublin County Council in the Dundrum electoral area.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of approved housing applicants of Dublin County Council in the Tallaght electoral area.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 38 and 39 together.

As housing authorities are not now required to submit details of housing applications in support of their proposals for housing schemes, the information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department.

May I ask the Minister if he would, as a Minister for Local Government anxious to make an impression as a Minister, find out from the local authorities throughout the country and particularly from the Dublin County Council the number of outstanding housing applications in their own county areas? This is the most elementary form of information which any self-respecting Minister for Local Government——

We cannot have a speech on this matter. The Deputy may put a question.

Is it a fact that the Minister is not aware of the number of approved applicants for housing in each local authority housing area?

The question relates to Dundrum and Tallaght.

It is a large area.

Would the Minister consider getting this information?

(Cavan): Surely the Minister is aware that one of his predecessors, not too long ago, caused very extensive inquiries to be made all over the country as to the number of people who required houses and what their position was? Is that information available in the Minister's Department?

The question does not apply to all over the country.

(Cavan): May I ask further——

The Deputy is putting a different question.

(Cavan): I am not, with due respect.

Questions Nos. 38 and 39 relate to Dublin.

(Cavan): No, one of them relates to Tipperary. Surely if the Minister has the information for the whole country he has it for that particular area.

We have not come to that question yet.

What the Deputy is saying is that if the Minister's predecessor got the information in relation to the entire country there must be a breakdown for the Tallaght area.

(Cavan): That is exactly what I am saying.

There is no breakdown for Tallaght. If the Deputy wants details of the housing developments at present being carried out in the Tallaght area I will be very glad to give it but, of course——

That is not the question.

——it might not suit the Deputy to have such progress listed at this time.

(Cavan): You did not make much progress last night.
