Vol. 249 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Greek Situation.

5.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, having regard to the continuation of the state of affairs in Greece which moved the Council of Europe to cause the expulsion of that country from the council for breaches of the European Declaration of Human Rights, he will take new initiatives in the Council of Europe and the United Nations with a view to expressing Ireland's concern in the matter.

A resolution which Ireland co-sponsored and which proposed the suspension of Greece from the Council of Europe was submitted to the Committee of Ministers of the Council on the 12th December, 1969. Greece thereupon announced its withdrawal from the council and legally ceases to be a member of the organisation from the 1st January, 1971. Greece has also denounced the European Convention on Human Rights and is no longer bound by that convention since the 13th June, 1970.

In the circumstances I do not propose to initiate further action in regard to Greece either in the Council of Europe or elsewhere.
