Vol. 251 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Title of Department of External Affairs.

10.

asked the Minister for External Affairs the specific reasons for the proposed change in the title of the Department of External Affairs to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

On my recommendation the Government have recently agreed that arrangements should be made to have the title of my Department changed to "Department of Foreign Affairs." This change is being made as "Foreign Affairs" is now the more usual and more appropriate term; the term "External Affairs" is of British Commonwealth origin.

Will the Minister state with what Department of State in Britain the Department of Foreign Affairs here will be in regular communication?

As a foreign government, we would deal with the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

Foreign or Commonwealth?

I think his full title includes both.

Surely the Minister must know with what British Department his Department are in touch?

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. What is the problem?

We are putting the questions.

I would like to ease the Deputies' minds of whatever problem they have.

He might finish up going to the Home Office by mistake.

I think they are seeing ghosts.

They always are.
