Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television Reception.

153.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what steps are being taken to improve radio and TV reception throughout Ireland and especially in parts of South-West Cork where the radio and TV signal is especially weak and non-existent in certain areas.

The improvement of reception is primarily a matter for Radio Telefís Éireann. I understand from the authority that since establishment of the VHF network of stations some years ago to provide for areas which could not receive medium-wave transmissions, radio reception has been generally satisfactory throughout the country. The authority point out, however, that in certain areas, including portions of South-West Cork the use of a small rooftop or attic aerial—as well of course as the correct type of receiving set—may be necessary.

Medium-wave reception over the entire country will be substantially improved when the Athlone transmitter is replaced by a more powerful one. RTE have this matter under active consideration at present, and also some works which will have the effect of improving VHF reception in certain areas.

Concerning television, I understand that the quality of reception is below an acceptable standard in a number of places, and that the authority are dealing with these on the basis of giving priority to the most populous areas. The necessary improvements in West Cork were planned for this year but owing to a deterioration in RTE's financial position these plans had to be put back, and I am now advised that they are unlikely to be implemented until 1973-74.

154.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the poor quality of television reception in the West Cork area; and what plans there are for bringing about an improvement in the position.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to Question No. 153. As I said in that reply the necessary improvements in this area were included in RTE's plans for this year but had to be put back because of the authority's financial position. I understand that it is now unlikely that the works involved will be carried out before 1973-74.

The remaining questions will appear on Tuesday's Order Paper unless Deputies are prepared to take written replies.
