Vol. 251 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deserted Wives' Allowances.

11.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of people who applied for deserted wives' allowances; and how many of them are receiving allowances.

The number of people who have applied for deserted wife's allowances to date is 1,844, and of these 1,144 are receiving allowances.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say what on average they would get by way of allowance?

I am afraid that is a different question.

It is the same as the widows' pension.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say for how long the 1,144 have been receiving allowances?

From the date of commencement.

They may have got retrospective pay but how long have they been getting cheques?

Since the scheme was implemented.

That would be quite impossible because there would have to be an investigation of each case?

From the date of their application they have been getting the allowance if they qualified for it.

And no investigation of any case?

Yes; all cases must be investigated.

For how many weeks or months have these cheques been issued.

The Deputy should know the answer by now.

I do not; I am looking for it.

(Interruptions).

Question No. 12.
