Vol. 252 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of House.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider making a preservation order in respect of the house at Frascati, Blackrock, County Dublin, in which Lord Edward FitzGerald resided, in view of its historic interest.

Frascati is historically associated with the FitzGeralds of Kildare and was occupied by Lord Edward FitzGerald towards the end of the 18th century. It is not regarded as a building of outstanding architectural merit nor is it considered to be of such historical interest as would warrant the issue of a preservation order under the National Monuments Acts.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary say that the building has no architectural value?

It is not a house that is mentioned in the Georgian Society history. It is a house that was converted a few years ago into several apartments.

I do not agree that merely because it is not mentioned by the Georgian Society it has no architectural value.

It is not listed for preservation by the planning authority either so there are other people who would not agree with the Deputy.
