Vol. 252 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Drainage.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance if the engineer who was in charge of the drainage work in 1963 in the Camp road area, Castleisland, County Kerry is still employed in the section concerned with such work.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay on the part of the engineering staff in the Office of Public Works in issuing a report to Kerry County Council regarding the problem of flooding in the Camp road area, Castleisland, County Kerry.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 12 and 13 together.

The Maine Drainage Scheme, completed by the Commissioners of Public Works in 1963, did not include the watercourses affecting the Camp Road area as they were not arterial drains. The scheme does, however, provide an outfall for works contemplated by the Kerry County Council to relieve the area of flooding.

The engineer who was in charge of the Maine Drainage Scheme construction works in 1963 is now in charge of inter alia, the maintenance of these works, and is familiar with the drainage conditions in the area in question. Although the commissioners have no liability in the matter they have agreed that he should explain to the local landowners the capability of the Maine Scheme to cope with the extra discharge that would result from the proposals which the Kerry County Council have in mind and advise the County Manager of the result. Because of other urgent commitments the engineer has so far been unable to visit the Camp Road area but he hopes to do so in the next week or so.
