Vol. 254 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Abbey Work.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the work which it is proposed to undertake at Selskar Abbey, Wexford, with the £200 allocated by him.

The proposed works at St. Selskar's Abbey this year consist of tidying, removal of vegetation and minor building repairs such as fixing loose masonry and pointing.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that there is a little more work needed there to restore the abbey?

The present commitments in the Wexford area include works urgently required at Ballyhack and Byrne's Castle. Work at these monuments is not expected to be completed until 1974. At that stage a comprehensive scheme for St. Selskar's will be considered. The Deputy may be aware that the last portion of this was only given over to the Office of Public Works last year. Last year the Representative Church Body placed the remainder of the group of buildings in question in the guardianship of the commissioners, that is, St. John's Tower, the 18th century gateway and the disused 19th century church. These only came into the charge of the Office of Public Works last year. Meanwhile essential repairs and general tidying up will continue to take place.

At the £200 level.
