Vol. 254 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Navan (Meath) Toilet Facilities.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance what arrangements are being made to restore to the people resident in the houses at Academy Street, Navan, County Meath, the toilet facilities which they had before the Office of Public Works carried out the arterial drainage of the Boyne in that area.

During the Boyne drainage operations at the back of Academy Street, Navan, all visible domestic sewage discharge pipes were extended to the river in consultation with the Meath County Council. If by any mischance a case should have been overlooked the Office of Public Works would be prepared to attend to it.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is not the only problem with regard to the matter of toilet facilities? Is he aware that buildings and facilities were removed and have not been replaced?

We did some work for the county council in connection with road widening, for which the county paid. I believe there are some industrial concerns whom we have not yet dealt with. I understand that the houses will be connected with the main sewerage scheme in the town in the near future.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that where facilities have been taken away there is no point in telling people that in 12 months' time a public sewer will be laid? As the Parliamentary Secretary has done in other cases, will he now get someone to investigate this matter and I am sure a solution will be found. There are two or three problems which require attention.

The people concerned should have the same facilities as they had previously and my information is that we have extended the pipes. It is possible that we may have left someone out. Is the Deputy saying that all the houses are affected?

There are certain matters affecting a number of houses as well as the other concerns. If the Parliamentary Secretary agrees to have the matter investigated I am prepared to leave it at that.

We will certainly do that.

Perhaps he would let me have a note when this is done.

I am calling Question No. 25.
