Vol. 254 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glasshouse Imports.

37.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in regard to the importation into this country of glasshouses from Holland. the duty applicable to the various components involved; and whether import licences are freely available to importers.

The framework of glasshouses is normally constructed of steel, aluminium and wood. Fabricated sections made of these materials are dutiable at rates varying between 30 and 40 per cent.

Licences are not granted remitting the duty on wooden sections. Licences are granted for steel sections if they are of a type suitable only for commercial size glasshouses, since there is no home production of such sections. In regard to aluminium sections licences are granted to importers provided orders are placed with the home producer for equivalent quantities of similar sections.

Any licences granted for glasshouse components imported from Holland do not relieve the importer from payment of the 5 per cent duty chargeable under the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement.
