Vol. 258 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Port Development.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the employment potential envisaged by the Dublin Port and Docks Board in the board's plans for the development of Dublin port.

I am informed by the board that the information sought by the Deputy will be included in the study of the long-term development of the Port of Dublin which they hope to publish in a few months time.

I understand that the recommendations in this study will be put forward not as firm plans for approval under the Planning Acts but rather for public discussion and for consideration by the various bodies who would be concerned.

Following such discussion and consideration, the board would hope to submit, in due course, firm plans for consideration by the planning authorities.

Could the Minister tell us how many months is "a few months" and how long we have to go on being told that this will be published in a few months time?

I agree. I have been impatient about this matter as well, but it is practically ready now. It is a matter of weeks rather than months.

We were told something like that several years ago.

The important matter is that, whatever plans come forward, they will be open to the public for discussion, debate and consideration. I can assure the House that there will be no finality about any plans that emerge from the board.

This will be a matter for consideration?

Yes, in the light of the public discussion and debate which takes place.

Government promises are a matter for further consideration.
