Vol. 259 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pensions Tax.

49.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the severe hardship being caused to IRA veterans who have to pay income tax on their military service pensions; and if he will take immediate steps to remedy the situation.

Military service pensioners are liable for payment of income tax under the same conditions as other members of the community. My Department have no function in relation to income tax except to make recoveries from military service pensions at the request of the Revenue Commissioners.

As one of those about whom Deputy Crowley asked this question, I would ask the Minister if he would consider, even at this late stage, granting this request because of the small number now getting this pension? It will not cost much. Every year the Minister is saving money. We hear a good deal of talk on the benches opposite about the Old IRA veterans. Surely this would be a good way for the Minister to show his sympathy.

As I indicated in my reply, the decision is not mine. It is a matter for the Department of Finance. My sympathy is with the Old IRA and I put as many benefits as possible in their way.
